How it works
Column names and tooltips are managed from one central place: Settings → Headings and tooltips. Changes here apply everywhere the field appears - cycle tables, employee views, and more.
You can also get there from within a cycle: go to Setup → Views and click Rename columns above the table.
The Headings and tooltips page has two sections:
Glossary (top) - rename high-level terms used across the platform (e.g., what you call "Salary" or "Bonus")
Field list (below) - rename individual column names and add tooltips for specific fields
Each field in the list shows three columns:
Default field name - the original name (always visible for reference)
Field name - the current display name (what your team sees)
Tooltip - hover text that appears on column headers
Renaming a column
Go to Settings → Headings and tooltips
Find the field you want to rename in the list
Click the edit icon next to the current field name
Type the new name
Click the checkmark to save (or ✕ to cancel)
The rename takes effect immediately across all tables and views.
Adding or editing a tooltip
On the same Headings and tooltips page, find the field in the list
In the Tooltip column on the right, click + Add tooltip if none exists yet, or the edit icon if one does
Write your tooltip text in the editor (supports bold, italic, links, and numbered lists)
Click the checkmark to save
Tooltips show as hover text on column headers in cycle tables - columns with tooltips display a dotted underline so proposers and approvers know to hover for more info. Great for adding guidance like "Enter the % merit increase based on performance rating" or "Current base salary as of cycle start."
Things to note
Renames and tooltips are company-wide - they affect every cycle and table where that field appears, not just one cycle
Setting a tooltip to blank and saving removes it entirely
